International expertise

Norway is one of our regular Scandinavian routes – but it is not an EU country: we travel by ferry (e.g. Kiel–Oslo) or overland through Denmark and Sweden and handle the required customs declaration. We know the routes to the north exactly.

Your belongings in safe hands

Professional and sea-worthy packing and insured transport all the way to the destination.

Your move from Germany to Norway

From the first consultation to setting up your new home, we take care of everything: we plan your move, supply packing material and moving boxes, pack professionally, organise transport and customs clearance and reassemble your furniture at the destination.

On request we handle the transport only or the complete full service – including part-load transport, storage in our own facilities, customs clearance and relocation service. That way your move to Norway becomes plannable and stress-free, whether you are moving to a big city or to the fjord.

Transport routes to Norway

The sea plays a central role for Norway: for your household goods we usually use the direct ferry Kiel–Oslo, on which the truck travels along, or shorter crossings such as Hirtshals–Kristiansand. For whole households (full loads), classic sea freight in a container is also a possible route. That way your goods travel with as little reloading as possible.

Air freight is rarely necessary for a move to Norway. It only makes sense for very urgent individual shipments – for example if a few important items need to be in Oslo or Bergen quickly. We advise you whether the extra effort is worthwhile and take care of packing and the customs formalities.

The overland route is often the best choice for Norway: by truck through Denmark and Sweden and across the border to Oslo, Drammen or Trondheim – usually within a few days, depending on the departure and route. We often combine the road route with a short ferry crossing. At the Norwegian border we handle the customs declaration. For smaller volumes a part load reduces the cost.

Family moving stress-free to Norway with Hartmann International

Move stress-free with Hartmann International

Since 1856 we have accompanied you at every step – from the personal consultation through the binding fixed-price quote to furniture assembly at your destination. Your goods are covered by the statutory carrier liability; on request we arrange extended transport insurance at replacement value. We work with permanent, fairly paid staff and our own fleet instead of subcontractors.

With our relocation service we take the official paperwork off your hands – for job-related moves as well as for private customers. We support you with, among other things, finding a home, registering in the national population register (Folkeregister), bank account, insurance and connecting electricity and internet. Thanks to the EEA agreement, EU citizens usually do not need a visa, but must register for a longer stay. That way you arrive in Norway relaxed from the very start.

Loading and customs clearance for a move to Norway

Customs & documents for your move to Norway

Norway is not part of the EU but belongs to the European Economic Area (EEA): a customs declaration at the border is therefore required for your move. When you permanently relocate your residence, however, your personal removal goods are usually imported duty-free – so you normally pay no import duties on your belongings, provided the supporting documents are complete.

For the duty-free import, Norwegian customs (Tolletaten) require, among other things, a complete inventory list and proof that you are relocating your residence to Norway. We handle the correct customs declaration and advise you on which documents to prepare for a smooth import. We do not quote rates out of thin air – we clarify the status of your removal goods bindingly in advance.

What does a move to Norway cost?

The cost of a move to Norway depends mainly on the volume, the distance and destination region (e.g. Oslo in the south or Trondheim further north), the route chosen (ferry or overland) and the services you choose. Added to this is the effort for the ferry crossing and customs clearance. A further lever is the part load: you share the loading space and pay only your portion.

Flat-rate guide prices are of little value for international moves. After a short assessment – by phone, video or on site – you therefore receive a binding fixed-price quote with no hidden costs, including transport, packing, the ferry and customs clearance.

Good to know about your international move

Container sizes

A 20-foot container holds about 30 m³ (roughly a 2–3-room flat), a 40-foot container about 60 m³ (a whole house).

Part-loads save money

With a part-load you share the cargo space with other shipments and pay only your share – ideal for smaller volumes and some flexibility on timing.

Plan ahead

Plan your move ideally 2–3 months in advance, or 3–6 months for overseas – for customs applications and sailing/flight schedules.

Insurance

Every transport is covered by carrier liability; for international moves we recommend extended transport insurance at replacement value.

Import restrictions

Not everything may be imported – certain foods, plants, medicines or weapons are restricted. We tell you in advance what can go on the inventory list.

Pets & vehicles

Cars, motorcycles and pets can come along too – pet transport is handled by specialised partners; we tell you which documents are required.

Tip: our moving checklist helps with planning. Transit times depend on destination and transport route – mainland Europe usually a few days, overseas several weeks; we state the exact timeframe in your quote.

Frequently asked questions

What does a move to Norway cost?

It depends on the volume, destination region (e.g. Oslo or Trondheim), the route chosen (ferry or overland) and the services you choose; the ferry and customs clearance are added. After a short assessment you receive a binding fixed-price quote with no hidden costs. A part load can save you even more.

How long does a move to Norway take?

By direct ferry Kiel–Oslo or overland through Denmark and Sweden, your goods usually arrive within a few days, depending on the departure and route. We plan in the customs clearance at the border. We state the exact timeframe in your binding quote.

Are there customs duties for a move to Norway?

Norway is not part of the EU but belongs to the EEA, so a customs declaration at the border is required. When you permanently relocate your residence, however, your personal removal goods are usually imported duty-free – you normally pay no import duties on your belongings if the supporting documents are complete. We handle the clearance.

Which documents do I need for customs clearance into Norway?

For the duty-free import of removal goods, Norwegian customs (Tolletaten) require, among other things, a complete inventory list and proof that you are relocating your residence to Norway. We tell you exactly what to prepare and handle the declaration.

Do you travel by ferry or overland to Norway?

Both are possible. We often use the direct ferry Kiel–Oslo or shorter crossings such as Hirtshals–Kristiansand, on which the truck travels along. Alternatively we go overland through Denmark and Sweden and across the border. Which route is worthwhile depends on the destination, the volume and the schedule.

Do you also move to Oslo, Bergen or Stavanger?

Yes. We organise moves to Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim and Drammen as well as to all regions of Norway – from a city flat to a house by the fjord.

Can I also transport furniture only partly (part load) to Norway?

Yes. With a part load you share the loading space with other shipments and pay only your portion – the most economical option if you are somewhat flexible on timing. We handle the required customs declaration for a part load as well.

Are my belongings insured on the way to Norway?

Yes. Every transport is covered by the statutory carrier liability. For international moves and the ferry crossing we recommend extended transport insurance at replacement value, which we arrange on request.

Do I need a visa for the move to Norway?

Thanks to the EEA agreement, EU citizens usually do not need a visa to move to Norway. For a longer stay, however, you must register and be entered in the national population register (Folkeregister). Our relocation service helps you with this.

Do you also handle the official paperwork in Norway?

With our relocation service we support you with finding a home, registering in the Folkeregister, bank account, insurance as well as electricity and internet – on request including on-site support.
