Planning a move abroad – within Europe or by sea overseas? Hartmann International has organised international removals since 1856: with sea and air freight, your own container, full customs clearance and a worldwide partner network – all from a single source.
For more than 170 years we have moved household goods safely to Europe and overseas. We arrange sea and air freight, dedicated containers (20 and 40 ft, FCL and LCL), cost-saving part loads and complete customs clearance. As a FAIM- and FIDI-certified company we work to international quality standards – from consultation to furniture assembly at your destination.
For overseas moves, sea freight in a container is the most economical option: a 20-foot container holds about 30 m³ (roughly a 2–3-room flat), a 40-foot container about 60 m³ (a whole house). Smaller or urgent shipments travel by air freight, and with a part-load (LCL) you share the container and save costs.
We handle sea-worthy packing, loading, shipping and the complete customs clearance – including transfer-of-residence documents and advice on visas and import regulations. As a FAIM-/FIDI-certified company with a worldwide partner network we accompany you through to delivery and furniture assembly at the destination.

For overseas moves, sea freight by container is the main route: for a complete household the dedicated 20- or 40-ft container is the most economical solution, while smaller volumes travel as a part load (LCL). Urgent or small shipments go by air freight. Within Europe we usually drive door to door by truck. We recommend the right route and handle packing, transport and customs from a single source.
For overseas moves we use standard sea containers: a 20-ft container holds around 30 m³ and is usually enough for a smaller apartment, while a 40-ft container holds around 60 m³ and takes the contents of a house. You can book a container exclusively (FCL) or share the space on a part load and pay only your share (LCL).
Within Europe your belongings usually reach the destination within a few days, depending on the distance. For overseas sea freight you should generally allow several weeks of transit time depending on the destination and route, plus customs clearance and delivery. Air freight is considerably faster. We state the exact timeframe in your binding quote.
There are no customs formalities within the EU. For moves to countries outside the EU a customs declaration with a complete inventory list is required. When relocating your residence you can usually import your used household goods duty-free as removal goods. We handle the complete customs clearance and tell you which documents are needed.
For a longer or permanent stay outside the EU you generally need an appropriate visa and a valid passport. We organise the move itself; with our relocation service we also support you with official errands, finding accommodation and registering in your destination country.
Yes. With a part load you share the container or transport vehicle with other shipments and pay only your share – the most economical option if you are flexible on timing. We also handle packing and customs clearance in this case.
Yes. Every transport is covered by the statutory carrier liability. Especially for long sea and air transports we recommend an extended transport insurance at replacement value, which we arrange for you on request.
For overseas moves we recommend several weeks to months of lead time so that container booking, customs documents and dates fit together. Within Europe a shorter lead time is often enough. It is best to enquire early – then we can secure the right date and advise you on all the documents.
